Churches hire atheist to sell Jesus

The Australian newspaper reports that a consortium of Australian churches have hired and advertising firm to help them boost church attendances across the nation. Heading up the campaign is Angus Kinnaird of FutureBrand. He’s an atheist or, as he prefers, a non-believing humanist.
The church, the Bible and religion are kept out of the picture. The focus is on Jesus. Not as the son of God but a tough-talking no-nonsense philosopher who makes life easier and, incidentally, eternal.
In the last month $250,000 has been spent in the city of Adelaide. No doubt millions will be spent across the nation over the next two years of the campaign.
After 2000 years, we’ve finally discovered the secret to effective world mission. If only Jesus had started the whole thing with an advertising executive by his side we could have save ourselves a lot of trouble and effort.
Unfortunately Angus has not been convinced by his own campaign. He’s still an atheist. But that’s ok. He’s also been hired to sell gambling on behalf of Melbourne’s Crown Casino and he’s not a regular gambler.
