Wandaro of Ethiopia

Wandaro

I will never give up my faith in Jesus Christ! I will gladly suffer for my Saviour.

Wandaro of Ethiopia
1919-1991

Arrested for his faith, flogged for three straight hours, and thrown into prison almost dead, Wandaro of Ethiopia (1919-1991) came out a year later to help lead his country’s fledgling church into enormous evangelistic growth. When missionaries were expelled in 1937 due to a political coup d’etat, there were only forty-eight baptized believers in the country, among them Wandaro. During the five years the missionaries were expelled, Wandaro and others zealously proclaimed the gospel.

When the missionaries were permitted to return in 1942, they were welcomed by a smiling Wandaro, his body covered with scars, and over 10,000 Ethiopian Christians, who made up over 100 churches. Some have called it the greatest story of church growth in African church history.

God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise;
God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.
I Cor. 1:27

Perhaps Wandora of Ethiopia has something to teach us about what it takes to see dynamic church planting movements in the West?
