Back to the Emerging church

There’s been some interest in The ins and outs of the Emerging church

Some clarifications.

I was writing in response to the picture of the Emerging church painted by Eddie Gibbs and Ryan Bolger’s book. They carefully set out the parameters of what they regard as the Emerging church before allowing its representatives to speak for themselves. There may be others who fall outside of the authors’ description and who regard themselves as Emerging. Their argument is with the authors and their methodology or even with the Emerging church leaders in the book who were clear about who was in and who was out.

My aim was to capture some of the flavour of this Emerging church—as described by Gibbs and Bolger. It was not to create false dichotomies or to parody the Emerging church. I was simply reflecting back the actual statements and viewpoints expressed by the Emerging church leaders in the book.

As a study of a religious movement in its infancy, I think it’s a very good book. I recommend people read it for themselves and come to their own conclusions about the Emerging church described within its pages. Even if you believe the Emerging church is broader than the one described, it is at least a very important stream in a wider movement.

Now, what do I think of this Emerging church? Well you’re going to have to wait a few more days for that. In my part of the world it’s almost Friday and Sunday’s coming. . . . Goodnight.

I heard Ryan Bolger talk in a few Fuller classes about this book before it came out. He noted nine characteristics of Emerging Churches in the U.S. and U.K. BUT, he emphasized that all the churches they visited and interviewed did NOT display all nine characteristics. Some had some of them, some didn’t.

I believe he DID say that the first three or four were common to all churches they visited. Here are the nine:

01 Following Jesus and His Model
    02 Transforming the Secular Realm
    03 Living Highly Communal Lives
    04 Welcoming Outsiders
    05 Sharing Generously
    06 Participating Fully
    07 Creating
    08 Leading Without Control
09 Functioning Together in Spiritual Activities

I think this is a really good book. Best desription of emerging church (in its narrow sense) available. More a description of what we in Oz might call the ‘alternative worship movement.’ Where it is lacking is that it fails to describe the other movements that make up what I prefer to call the ‘emerging missional movement’, namely, the whole organic/simple church phenomenon as well as the ‘missional church’ discussion. I think we need the three together to make the whole thing tick.

I’ve just finished it and agree with Alan’s comments. It is a great book and a description of what’s going on for thse of us who have observed and wondered. It’s limitation is that it is limited to the US and UK (and intentionally states this due to the limitations of time and money). But is is refreshing to see younger Christians’ freely questioning some of the assumptions about church and rather then walking away, trying something different.
