Ross, I've wondered the same thing myself sometimes. I still think God used the 'mistake' to deepen his character and spiritual authority. Seems to be a recurring theme in the lives of the great founders. They know Christ in the fellowship of his sufferings and the power of the Resurrection. Thanks for your thoughts.

An alternative lesson is that Great Leaders can sometimes make mistakes. John Wesley might have been a much happier man with Grace at his side. We do not know that she would have hindered his ministry. His success was not so much in preaching everywhere. Whitfield drew crowds too who were also powerfully impacted by the Holy Spirit. John Wesley's great success, I believe, was in setting up classes where the believers kept each other faithful and focussed. If we want to learn from Wesley our church planting needs to be concerntrating on reproducable small groups where the discipleship is authentic and life transforming.

God bless
