Wilson Carlile and the Church Army

Church Army Van Stokes Bridge 1898
This week I’m in Sydney speaking at the national conference of the Church Army Australia on movements.

I did some research on the Church Army and their founder Wilson Carlile. An inspiring tale.

Carlile left school at fourteen to make his fortune which he did by the time he was twenty six. Then came the depression of 1873 and a severe illness that kept him in bed for six months.

He found Christ and a cause to fight for an eventually founded the Church Army as a renewal movement within Anglicanism.

It’s a great story, so I’ve written it up. You can download the pdf below.

I’ll be telling the Church Army this week that movements are renewed by making an innovative return to their tradition.

Read how the Church Army Australia is doing just that: Wresting against flesh and blood.

But don’t be surprised if God has his eye on some fourteen year old somewhere out there. The birth of new movements is the recurring story of the renewal and expansion of the church in mission. Bring it on Lord.
